• SOURCE TYPES in the Works Cited:
  • ELECTRONIC RESOURCES: Most electronic sources will create a Works Cited entry for you.  The LMC's resources will default to MLA form.  If you need APA or another form, you will have to change the settings.  SIRS will give you all of the information you need for a citation, but it will not put it in MLA form.   When you find the citation in MLA form cut and paste it into your Works Cited document. 
    • When using e-books, click CITATION TOOLS in the red box.  Then click SAVE and then OPEN. 
    • Databases also provide formated Works Cited entries, although the way you access them varies from publisher to publisher.  Some examples follow:
      • Thompson Gale's OPPOSOING VEIWPOINTS RESOURCE CENTER:  click HOW TO CITE and then click SAVE and then OPEN.
      • EBSCO:  click PRINT and then PRINT to access MLA entires.
      • iCONN's DISCOVERING COLLECTION:  click HOW TO CITE and then click SAVE and then OPEN
      • OXFORD ART ONLINE: click CITE
  • PRINT BOOK:  To create a works cited entry for a hard copy book, use the link for Ottobib, which can be found on the LMC main page .  Simply enter the ISBN number. 
  • WEB SITES:  Sites from the web do not create a works cited entry for you.  You will need to use a citation machine. 
    • To create a works cited entry for a Web site or other source, use the link for the Landmark citation machine, which can be found on the LMC main page.  Select MLA and then the document type, such as WEB DOCUMENT.  You will need to input the correct information. 
    • Be careful inputting information.  If you misspell an entry or enter incorrect information, the citation machine will not fix it for you.  You must follow the format given for your entries. 
    • If the needed informationfor the entry is hard to find on the website, it is usually an indication that the source is not research quality. 
• WORKS CITED Format:
  • Alphabetize by the first word in each entry.  If two or more entries have the same first word, use the first TWO words and so on.  Do not include a, an, or the. 
  • Do not group sources by type.  Alphabetize the whole list. 
  • Use a hanging indent.  (In Word, go to format, paragraph, special, hanging)
  • Double space the whole page, not just between entries.  (In Word, go to format, paragraph, spacing, double)
  • Make sure the font is consistent over the page. 
  • The title of this page is Works Cited.  It should be cnetered and in the same font and size as the rest of the page.  Do not underline, bold, or in any way change the font.  Double space between the title and the entries (the whole page is simply double spaced). 
• PARENTHETICAL DOCUMENTATION Format:
  • Put the first word in the Works Cited entry in the parentheses.  This is most often, but not always the author's name. 
  • If the first word is part of a title, use any underlining and quotation marks that are in the entry in the parentheses. 
  • Use only one word if possible.  If two or more entries have the same first word, use the first TWO words and so on.  Do not include a, an, or the. 
  • Put a space between the word and the page numbers.  Do not add page, pg., p., pp, etc.  If no page is given, then use np.
  • Always put the parenthetical documentation at the end of a sentence, not within it.  Put the endmark for the sentence (period, question mark, etc.) after the parenthesis, not before it, except when you have a quotation in the long format.
